Each time a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
