Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
