European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
