The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of the former president's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
